H&M Motorsports Tour

It's about noon on a Tuesday, and I've just received a call to make an unplanned parts run to H&M Motorsports of San Marcos, CA. I make the trip down there, and as I walk through the door I'm immediately greeted by a man named Kevin. I ask if I can do an impromptu shop tour, and am welcomed into the shop. It turns out, the man at the counter is H&M co-owner, Kevin Mahan, the 'M' in H&M. He then proceeded to take me around the shop, stopping first to check out Buff Herman's (co-owner of H&M) 98 Ford Ranger.

Buff Herman's 98 Ranger is currently under construction, but will soon be featuring one of their own modified long travel suspension kits and a linked rear suspension. This Ranger was originally the prototype chassis for the H&M production long travel kit, but it has since been removed to be replaced with a modified kit with room for a bypass shock. Custom tube chassis from the cab back, and powered by a Ford Explorer 5.0 v8, Buff's truck is going to be one serious prerunner.

Next in line is Keith Voysey's F150 prerunner. Keith had some special demands for this truck. He wanted 4 wheel drive, and plenty of storage space in the back for his toys. He also wanted glass bedsides that he could "stand on". The guys at H&M said no problem, and got to work creating the ultimate desert tailgate party prerunner. His truck is a 97 F150 4 wheel drive, with a custom front suspension system that resembles their production F150 long travel kit, but is adapted for 4 wheel drive. The front end is pulling 15" of travel. The rear of the truck is 4 linked, featuring a custom rear end housing built in house by H&M. The rear is cycling 26" of travel, with dampening provided on all four corners by King shocks.

Next in line is Carl Anderson's F150, which will be sporting their long travel production kit and a 4 link in the rear. The front and rear upper shock mounts are works of fabrication art, and truly illustrate the level of skill the guys at H&M have.
