Luck is on my side! need help with suspension issues on 12 car

Postby hotdogwater » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:48 am

Well I finally got all the broken stuff off the car from the last race and am trying to figure out the damage. Lost the inner bold holding the DVR side trailing arm in the last race. We pulled into TAR's pit (who was trying to fix my steering issues) when we noticed the back end was sad!

I got the thing apart but not sure how to fix it. The inner bold where the swing arm bolts to the frame came loose but the shaft that goes through the swing arm is bent, or rusted between the bushings so I couldn't force it out last time I tried. What I am trying to figure out is how do I get the threaded shaft out (shop with big press maybe, heat it up?)

I also have 2 differnet ends on this thing, the outside has a brass end(maybe and old washer that has pounded itself into the steel swingarm cup?) and the other side has some bushing (black in the pic).

What next? Press the bar out and mic the bushings? What type of bushing is this, PVC/urethane? Can you still get these things somewhere? I had to grind down the threaded shaft since it was mushroomed from pounding back there on one bolt so do I have this bar fab'ed somewhere or does Kartek sell this sort of stuff?

Thanks in advance for the help!

And one other question.

Will these work on to keep my from turning into my front coil overs? I need some basic stops to keep tires off the coils and this seems like a cheap easy way to get stops for the welding challenged person like me. I lost 4 bolds from my SACO rack and need to replace them, thought this might give me a turn lock/stop too.

Thanks BB, this seems like it would work to keep me from steering into my coils, but didn't want to put stress on something that could cause issues down the road.

Hope 5racer gets back on soon, gotta get some parts ordered if I have a chance to make the next race. Gonna pound on that old axle this weekend and see if I can get it out.

Press the old bushings out. If your going the delrin route, don't grease them and run them a little on the loose side. Plastic is very expansive and if they are tight they will tear them selfs apart.

For the inner mounts, are they blind bolts?

I think I understand what a blind bolt is and no, the inside bolt(one that came off) is a regular bolt.

The mount looks like this.

The red circle (outside mount) has threads on the inside of the mount and the longer bolt with that washer that is welded to the frame and bolt. The inside mount (green circle) uses the smaller bolt and has no threads on the mount. So if the outer bolt is held in place with threads and tack welded in place, what holds the inner bolt? The inner bolt is recessed in the frame mount (not easy to get to) so no welding that bolt in place, and it didn't have a lock washer.

It didn't work last race and trying to figure out how to get it to work at the next race. Or is this just something you have to tighten every race/lap/pit?

Blind bolted meaning it screws into something on the frame. Or through bolted meaning it has a nut on the end. What you need are a couple of tabs welded on and these..........

Any time you can't get a lock not on something you need to have something like this to keep it from loosening up. Drivers side is especially prone to loosening due to the way the suspension is rotating under load. Having the sleeves seized in the bushings doesn't help any either..........

Also, welding on bolts is really bad practice.

I have also seen people weld tube around the bolts with a hole drilled in it so that you can put a pin trough it to keep the bolt from backing out. This only keeps you from loosing the bolt though, it doesn't keep it tight.......

Thanks PBP I think I found a solution. I have these bolts (with an hex head) so your solution won't work for me.

I did find these on Kartek that look like they are for this issue.

Now for beam bushings, any suggestions. the ones I'm pulling out are white, thats all I know.

Thanks,

There are two versions of the "white" (Delrin) beam bushings. These: http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/1169/AC413116/ which are $50 and you can get anywhere. Or the better ones from Karteck/McKenzies etc. They are $50 each though and last longer.

Oh I need, i need!!!

I will be packing my stuff up and heading your way tomorrow. I not overly optimistic that my ride will be ready for the race.

I ordered the rack parts last night, the beam bushings are on the way. There's a chance, small one but a chance I will be ready.

Outside of the suspension problems, the car is looking good. At least I can clean the frame with my messed up hand. The front is cleaned and clear coated, making my way to the back.
