With their first release, SUD Productions has already taken a huge step into the off-road video market. The sport’s ever growing popularity makes it challenging to create a product that stands out from competition which floods the market. Looking at each aspect of the movie, Built from Nothing makes strides while also leaving room for improvement in future releases.
It’s easy to see the time and effort put into Built from Nothing. The camera work is relatively basic, with some artistic shots spread throughout the film. Some of the scenes become repetitive with basic shots of trucks passing by, repeatedly using the same angle. The footage itself is top notch, employing a wide range of editing techniques which flexes SUD’s creative side. Trucks and locations are constantly changing along with the speed of the movie. It is organized by venue, with footage from SCORE, MORE, MDR, Tuff Trucks, and BITD. They also mix in shots from Glamis and other amusing scenes to break from the pace of racing. Music seems to be another staple of any off-road movie and Built from Nothing doesn’t disappoint viewers. It incorporates a wide range of styles and sounds that fit and flow with the footage.
It’s easy to throw together footage and make it entertaining, but creating a movie that communicates the heart of desert racing is challenging. Built from Nothing’s greatest quality is its ability to offer a true feeling of why the sport consumes people’s lives. They show the personal involvement and closeness of people in the sport and racing. It goes beyond just footage to demonstrate the passion of the sport and remind us why we were attracted to it in the first place.
