Driver: Ryan Plowman & Brian Munson Co-Dog: Jeremy Stafford
Heading into the Best In The Desert Parker 425, we were very optimistic about our goals. DSC Racing plans on running the entire BITD series this year, and coming out of the Parker 425 in one piece, with a Top 5 finish was our goal. A ground up prep was done on the Kreger Class 12 car to ensure that this was the case. A fresh DFT prepped Mendeola S5 transmission and a new motor built by Doug Maxwell Racing Engines were ready to reek havoc on the competition.
Ryan Plowman was set to start the race, with Brian Munson relieving him of driving duties for Lap 2, where Ryan would get back into the car for the last lap. Each lap consisted of 142 miles of the most diverse terrain you can find north of the border, and this driver setup allowed Ryan and Brian to be on top of their game each lap. The plan was a simple fuel and driver swap each lap with a quick once over of the race car, and that is exactly how the cards fell.
Off to a great start, Ryan and Brian decided to set a consistent pace until the last lap, when Ryan would know exactly where they stood on corrected time. Jeremy Stafford would once again have the duty has navigator, making sure both drivers stayed on course and chose the corrected lines to ensure their solid performance. Within the first part of the race they were running first on the road, and first on corrected time. This is not what they had planned for, but it looked as though their plan to run consistent and smooth had paid off. When Ryan got back in the car, after a quick meal and time to rehydrate, he had to put a little over 3 minutes on the car behind him, Jake Jones, in order to win.
Half way through the last lap, Ryan pushed hard and had gotten the car in the spot he needed to in order to pull off the win. Just then, the wonderful skies in Parker, AZ decided to open and rain began to fall. With a little over 30 miles to go, during a terenchal downpour, Ryan hit a puddle of water that nearly ended their day. The puddle had soaked the distributor on the engine and the car nearly turned off. At this point, Ryan and Jeremy had no intercom or radio for communication; they were on their own. Jeremy quickly got out of the car to check everything out, wasting valuable time, and after what seemed like eternity, they decided to keep pushing on. At this point, the car would not go above 20mph and sounded like it was only running on 1 cylinder. Then, in the mirror, Ryan and Jeremy spotted the 2nd place car coming up fast. Unfortunately there was nothing they could do but watch as 1st place slipped through their fingers.
Crossing the line in 9:03:06, was the 2nd place car of Ryan Plowman, Brian Munson, and Jeremy Stafford. This time gave them a 22nd overall position, in front of numerous Class 1, Trophy Trucks, and Class 10 cars. A hard fought day proved that the combination of Kreger Fabrication’s chassis, a Dave Folts prepped Mendeola S5, Doug Maxwell’s solid performing engine, and a well rounded team can compete for wins, even in their first year of racing full time.
Look for Ryan and DSC Racing this season as he contends for the points championship with Best in the Desert, as well as battling for the Rookie of the Year title.
